The College of Charleston has withdrawn its initial rezoning request to allow a 7-story parking garage with ground-floor retail at 81 Wentworth Street. A revised submittal is expected before the Planning Commission later this summer. The HVA Planning & Zoning Committee, alongside the Historic Charleston Foundation and the Preservation Society of Charleston, voiced strong concerns about the proposed structure’s height, massing, and scale—particularly its proximity to residential buildings and the historic fabric of the neighborhood.
