February Board Meeting

  1. Presidents Report
    1. Meeting with Mike Seekings: Joe and Josh had a meeting with Mike Seekings to discuss various issues:
      1. 80 Ashley Property: The 80 Ashley property is under contract for sale, pending a rezoning variance to allow office space. Joe and Wiley had an introductory meeting with Ryan Mitchell and their plans to use the first floor for his wife’s (Annie Gallagher) interior design shop with one employee and appointment only, and use the second floor for his home building business, with two employees. HCF is in favor and it will be going to BZA in April. At the time, there will be further review of plans by HVA Planning & Zoning Committee. They are committed to using quality materials and improving the current paved portion of the lot. The board suggested asking them to consider “greening” the corner of lot, softening the effects of the paved area

      2. Storm Drainage Maintenance: Mike confirmed that the city does not have a fixed schedule for storm drainage maintenance but operates on a rotation. However, the rotation is negatively impacted by limits in work crews. There are five Vac-trucks, and only 2 ½ crews due to labor shortages. He adds that Harleston receives ample attention on ad hoc basis.

      3. JW Grocery Store Garbage Cans: Mike and City Livability person, Alan Eady, report that the store may have a variance that allows trash can placement on the sidewalk. Mike understands the situation is not acceptable for the neighborhood. Changes in variance/ordinance should be forthcoming to not allow this practice. Livability Committee to follow-up.

    2. Adopt A School Initiative: An invitation from Charleston County's Adopt- A- School initiative has been received. The program aims to link local organizations with schools, offering opportunities for engagement; for example, being “principal for a day. Lisa Rockenbach volunteered interest in the program. Joe to forward information.

    3. May Membership Meeting: Joe emphasized the importance of the upcoming May 8 membership meeting. Featured guest speakers include Mayor Cogswell, Mike Seekings and Robert Summerville (City Traffic Department) and Kate White from Charleston Parks.
